AWM Vehicle Depot

Description

As part of the efforts of the refuse management department of Bavarian capital Munich to reorganize its facilities, the insufficient Depot East at Truderinger Straße was completely replaced with a new building. Situated along the rail tracks forming the southern site border, the new building is a simple holistic structure combining administrative functions and the fleet of vehicles under one roof.

The main access to the depot is on the east of the site. In this area the building has two storeys defining an entrée situation from where the entire entrance area can be overlooked. On the longitudinal ground floor, all areas required for fleet and refuse containers, like washing hall, operational equipment, workshop, storage and carport are aligned according to their function.

An essential part of the layout is an elevated platform on round columns, which spans all the areas in one piece and, at the same time, provides additional space. The stacking of functions ensures that the compact site is used efficiently and the longitudinal building, which is accessible from all sides, can be zoned clearly.

On the approximately 40 m x 150 m platform, staff services such as changing rooms, washing rooms and canteen as well as administrative offices are located behind a mirrored façade. The expansive flat roof, which is to a large extent a green roof, is equipped with skylights and a tank for the heating of non-potable water. The expanse has a special visual impact on passing train passengers.

The roof consists of a prefabricated ribbed ceiling with in-situ concrete topping. The 1 m strong platform edge is clad with aluminum. As a projection of the platform a concrete floor slab rises from the asphalt area, which acts as non-roofed parking for large containers as well as access and circulation route.
