NKBAK architects turned to prefabricated modular timber construction when faced with the task of provided a school building quickly for European School in Frankfurt am Main completed in 2015. After the success of this project, a second project followed in 2017, a temporary building for the Kalbach-Riedberg Integrated Comprehensive School.
Following the same principle, NKBAK planned three more schools in Berlin, the Integrated Secondary School, Mahlsdorf (2019), the Primary School Konrad-Wolf-Strasse in Lichtenberg (2019) and the Primary School in Sewanstrasse in Berlin-Friedrichsfelde (2020)
The commissions for two new primary schools in the Berlin district of Lichtenberg followed in October 2017. The first of these in the Konrad-Wolf-Strasse was ready for use in August 2019. Both schools are primary schools with three parallel classes per year for each of the six years. Alongside classrooms, the schools have workrooms, an art room and a teaching kitchen. Each of the schools also has a separate sports hall that is of the same type designed by the architects for the school in Mahlsdorf. The colourful lounges seen in Mahlsdorf are arranged here as mini compartments for the individual school years. The two primary schools share the same façade principle of overlapping sections made of vertically mounted 14-cm-wide boards – although the “boards” of the Konrad-Wolf-Strasse school are made of aluminium rather than wood.
