Reussinsel Housing Complex

Markus Kuntscher, Ulrike Wietzorrek

Description

Access:

Passageways on the elevated first floor connect the street side to the river side; vertical point access with three units per floor; interior stairwell; stairwells lit by windows.

Interior space:

The living rooms and individual rooms, where noise is more of an issue, face the serene, attractive view of the river. The rooms for which noise is less of an issue, such as the kitchens and bathrooms, face the street and train track and have winter gardens in front of them. A continuous living/dining room in the center, in which the kitchen is placed like a box, benefits from the advantages of both sides.

Exterior space:

Roof terraces facing the river.

Morphology:

This gently bent volume rests on a base of exposed concrete and follows the course of the river. The river facade, which is generated by a wave movement, causes the volume to reach into the river area and then jump back again. This breaks down the length of the building, resulting in interesting shadings in the full-height windows. The bay-window-like slants also improve the angle of view out of the apartments and along the river.
